Two of the most important artists in Latin America were a common path. “Beauty and the beast”-two incredibly striking and dynamic figures, that names were often involved in intrigue, have chosen to live their love and to share their lives with each other.

When they decided to build a common home, they have the young architects and Diego BB´s friend and colleague Juan O ´ Gorman asked to design a House for them.

The semi-detached was by the architect Juan O Gorman ´ in the style of functionalism in 1932 in San Angel, Mexico City built

O ´ Gorman had just graduated from the free State Academy of Mexico and began a promising career in architecture. His first works were strongly influenced by the architects Le Corbusier (“function determines the shape”) worked in the style of functionalism.

So casas Gemelas – an Zwillingshaus project, which had the task to represent the different worldviews of Frida and Diego originated in 1932. Two buildings that were at the same time two houses and two studios for two free lovers. The White was for Diego, the Blaue-for Frida. The work of O ´ Gorman was awarded as one of the first works of functionalist architecture in Latin America.

Functionalism covers usually the essential needs of the user. During this time, the importance of functionalism in San Angel, where Frida and Diego lived was all the greater. For them, it was an expression of the resistance against the previous period of Spanish colonialism and the related architectural ornaments and outdated structures.
