dOCUMENTA is an art-word created in 1955 for the first art exhibition at the time. The dOCUMENTA creators took the Latin word”documentum”, which carries the meanings of”docere”and”mens”- spirit, thus fulfilling the demands of art-creators.

In 2012 dOCUMENTA13 took place. The next 100 – day spectacle will probably take place in the summer of 2017 in Kassel.

During the dOCUMENTA, both permanent exhibition venues such as the Fridericanum are used, as well as the dOCUMENTA-built venues especially for dOCUMENTA. Such spaces, which seem to be quite foreign to art, such as warehouses or railway stations, are being remodeled and rendered suitable for exposition.

Not only buildings are used for dOCUMENTA. Many activities take place in the open air.
