Easter well in the Franconian Switzerland

Why was the tradition in the region of the Franconian Switzerland?
The water in this region is scarce and precious. Difficulties with water supply plagued the population and she suffered tantalizing lack of water in the past. So, people started to honor the fountain and to “clean it” of the dirt of the winter and fall season. But thanks to modern water supply the custom over the years lost its importance and only since the 50s of the last century was called the Brunenschmuck in the new life.
Today, this tradition is a true tourist attraction. Visitors from all over Germany want to see the magnificently decorated Easter well in the two most popular Franconian cities of Heiligenstadt and Bieberbach. The name of the town Bieberbach is even in the book of Guinness records. in 2001, the city wells in Bieberbach was decorated with over 11 000 hand-painted Easter eggs. in 2005, the inhabitants of the town of Sulzbach Rosenberg this record broke with their 16 500 Easter eggs.

How is the well decorated and when?
The fountain is decorated on good Friday and the decoration will stop for 14 days. The traditional fountain jewelry consists of eggs (blown out and painted), fresh green, flowers and ribbons. Garlands of pine branches, richly adorned with colorful Easter eggs, decorating the Easter well as arches and symbolize fertility, vitality and delight.
