An important factor for the coziness of any room, which is unfortunately often neglected when furnishing it, is the right lighting. Because nothing is more disturbing at dinner than a bright light that still falls directly into the eyes and dazzles everyone unpleasantly. But where is the secret to successful lighting design for your own four walls? What are the right light sources and how should they be positioned? Where do you need a ceiling luminaire and above all what kind? How can it be combined with other light sources? Questions about questions to which we intend to give the right answers in the next few lines.
Finding the right ceiling light for every room
Since the conventional light bulb has virtually disappeared from the market and energy-saving lamps and LEDs are on the advance, choosing the right light source is not an easy matter. Of course, you can rely on experienced staff and lighting experts to buy your lamps, but it would still be useful if you knew something about the world of light in advance.
For example, a ceiling lamp is the best basic light for practically every room in your home. This is the so-called direct lighting, which is responsible for a basic brightness. This illuminates rooms with little shadow and contrast.
Flat ceiling luminaires with modern design
In addition to flat ceiling luminaires that diffuse light, ceiling spotlights are also highly recommended for optimum lighting concepts. In contrast to the first version, which illuminates the entire room uniformly, spotlights can be rotated or tilted in a very practical way, allowing any part of the room to be set in the scene – reading corners, works of art or why not a beautiful heirloom?
Dimmable lamps are recommended for ceiling luminaires as well as other types of lighting as they provide more flexibility and different moods in the ambiance. LEDs are at the top of the list here because they are not only dimmable and energy-saving but also emit a soft, soft light. A great advantage of LEDs is the fact that they have no wearing parts like ordinary light bulbs and their electronic LED driver should rarely be replaced.
Observe the style and function of the ceiling lamp
The matching ceiling lamp is much more than just a simple light source. It is also an important living accessory, which should be adapted to the furnishing style in the best possible way. Retro classics, nostalgic vintage-style lamps or more modern luminaires with an industrial touch – the choice is, of course, entirely up to you. Take a look at numerous models of ceiling lamps in local specialist shops and on the Internet and decide for the perfect ceiling lamp in every single room of your home.
Want some technical knowledge?
If you are already familiar with the style and function of your ceiling lights, you should acquire a little technical knowledge before the actual purchase. The three most important terms lumen, Kelvin and color rendering index are actually quite sufficient.
Do you still remember the 60 Watt light bulb quite well? Now there are 730 lumens on the packaging of LEDs instead. Lumens stand for the brightness of the light and indicate the light output of a luminaire. But not only this criterion is important when choosing a light source, but also the so-called light color, which is always in Kalvin. It is also referred to as color temperature. Roughly speaking, white LED light has different shades ranging from warm white to neutral white and daylight white. If a luminaire has up to 3,300 Kelvin, then it is said that the light is warm white. Up to 5,300 Kelvin, the lamp glows in neutral white and with a higher Kelvin number the light is daylight white.
In principle, warm white has a relaxing and cozy effect, neutral white is more stimulating and good for waking up and daylight helps to optimize concentration and performance.
And what about the color rendering index? This is measured in Ra and indicates how well and naturally the colors in the room are illuminated. Index values between 80 and 100 Ra are optimal.
The right mix makes the difference
The good mixture is very good, even when it comes to lighting. So don’t just rely on a single ceiling luminaire, but on several combined light sources and create different islands of light in the room. The result is a balanced lighting landscape that provides more coziness and pleasant harmony. Experts recommend combining three different elements for room lighting: Ceiling luminaires (provide the basic light), wall or floor luminaires (which are responsible for zone lighting) and table luminaires or decorative lamps (which provide accent lighting and extra atmosphere).
In addition, a balanced combination of direct and indirect lighting should be created. While direct light contributes to a better basic brightness, indirect or reflected light helps to visually enlarge rooms and make them more comfortable.
Create your very special ambiance with the right light combination!
In order to design your lighting at home correctly, you should already pay attention to some things. In addition to style and function, light output, color temperature and color rendering index also play a fairly important role in your purchasing decision. Rely on the right ceiling lamp as successful basic lighting for any room and combine it with other suitable light sources such as table and wall lamps or ceiling floodlights and batten luminaires. Simply create the perfect light mix and don’t forget the rule of thumb: Your brighter furnished rooms always need less light than those that are darker furnished!
